DART AE Achieves Sustained Mach 5+ Hypersonic Flight

Accelerating Low-cost, Responsive, and Long Endurance Hypersonic Flight Testing

Developing hypersonic capabilities requires extensive real-world testing, yet flight opportunities globally have been limited, costly and infrequent. This has slowed innovation and made it difficult to validate new technologies in real flight environments.

To address this challenge, the US Department of War's Defence Innovation Unit (DIU) launched the Hypersonic and High-Cadence Airborne Testing (HYCAT) program. The initiative is designed to prototype low-cost, high-cadence hypersonic flight testing by partnering with commercial innovators capable of delivering scalable, repeatable test platforms.

HYCAT’s mission focuses on capturing critical flight data that can accelerate the production of future systems, with Hypersonix Launch Systems awarded the first contract under the program.

“Accessing the commercial and non-traditional ecosystem is a key enabler to accelerating progress in the hypersonics community of interest, particularly for closing mission timelines and driving towards mass and affordability.”

Hypersonix and DART AE Selected for Testing

Hypersonix’s DART AE aircraft was selected from more than 60 applicants to execute the mission. This test vehicle had been developed by Hypersonix to demonstrate reusable, scalable and environmentally responsible hypersonic flight capabilities.

DART AE advantages:

  • Manufacturing scalability – Fully 3D-printed design enables scalable production and supports low-cost, high-cadence operations
  • Controlled manoeuvrability – Autonomous flight system capable of following controlled, non-ballistic flight trajectories
  • Sustainable propulsion – Powered by the hydrogen-fuelled SPARTAN scramjet engine, producing zero CO2 emissions
  • Mission suitability – Designed for extended flight range and the collection of critical hypersonic flight data

DART AE Delivers Affordable and Reliable Hypersonic Flight

The mission was conducted in partnership with launch provider Rocket Lab, using their HASTE launch vehicle to deploy the DART AE into a suborbital operational flight environment.

Hypersonix’s DART AE achieved separation and sustained Mach 5+ flight.

When released into the upper atmosphere, DART AE achieved sustained flight and gathered invaluable technical data to validate propulsion, material, sensor and guidance system performance in real hypersonic flight conditions.

The launch took place on Friday February 27 th 2026 from Rocket Lab Launch Complex 2 within the Virginia Spaceport Authority’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport on Wallops Island, Virginia.

“Successfully flying DART AE in a true hypersonic environment confirms that an Australian company can design, build and operate technology in one of the most demanding flight regimes on Earth. It is an important step toward delivering hypersonic systems that are operationally relevant for Australia and its allies.”

Building the Future of Hypersonic Space Flight

The milestone represents an important step toward building scalable, repeatable hypersonic flight test capability. The data captured during the DART AE flight will support DIU’s HYCAT program by providing valuable insights into propulsion,
aerothermal performance and vehicle behaviour in hypersonic conditions.

The learnings from this mission will contribute to Hypersonix’s development of future hypersonic aircraft, advanced manufacturing capabilities, and next-generation flight systems.

“At these speeds and temperatures, there is no substitute for [hypersonic] flight data. What we learn from this mission will directly inform the next-generation of reusable hypersonic aircraft.”

Dr Michael Smart, Hypersonix Co-Founder and CTO.

Hypersonix's long-term mission is to build reusable platforms capable of delivering sustained hypersonic flight to space, with this first flight successfully demonstrating our ability to deliver lower-cost, higher-cadence testing that accelerates innovation across the aerospace industry.
